THE HONEST WOOD CUTTER
STORY INTRODUCTION:
Once upon a time, there lived an honest woodcutter named Ram. He was poor but content, earning his livelihood by cutting wood from the forest and selling it in the village. Ram was known for his honesty and kindness, and he always treated others with respect.
THE LOST AXE
One day, while chopping wood near a river, Ram’s axe accidentally slipped from his hand and fell into the deep water. Feeling sad, he sat by the riverbank, wondering how he would continue to support his family without his axe.
THE DIVINE INTERVENTION
As Ram was mourning his loss, the river Goddess appeared before him. She was moved by his sorrow and decided to help him.
River Goddess asked Ram “Why are you so sad, woodcutter?”
Ram explained his problem. The Goddess, impressed by his honesty, decided to test him. Firstly, She dived into the river and emerged with a glowing golden axe.
“Is this your axe?” River Goddess asked.
Ram shook his head. “No, that is not my axe.”
The goddess then dived back into the river and returned with a shiny silver axe.
“Is this your axe?” she asked again.
Ram shook his head once more and said “No, that is not my axe either.”
Finally, the goddess brought out Ram’s old, worn iron axe.
“Is this your axe?” she inquired.
Ram’s face lit up with joy. “Yes, that is my axe! Thank you so much!”
REWARD FOR HONESTY
The goddess was pleased with Ram’s honesty. “You are an honest man, Ram. As a reward for your honesty, I will give you all three axes: the golden, the silver, and your iron axe.”
Ram was overwhelmed with gratitude. Ra\1m0 thanked the goddess and returned home with the three axes. He sold the golden and silver axes and used the money to improve his family’s living conditions. Despite his newfound wealth, Ram remained the same humble and honest man.
Moral of the Story
Honesty is always rewarded, while dishonesty brings about its own downfall. Being truthful and honest in all situations is the best policy.
